This year’s Chosen Pairs had a Guy Fawkes theme but the day proved mild and sunny, a welcome change in November! Eight teams rolled out with Roz and Julie looked splendid as Guy Fawkes!
Three hotly contested games in the morning with Carrie and Mark leading the plotters at lunch. Sadly George and Gary fizzled out after lunch – a familiar tale!
Carrie and Mark where winners with Paul and Sheila second, Don and Bob third and George and Gary forth. Roz and Julie were consolage winners.
Many thanks to Sheila and Sue for their hospitality. Excellent Bacon Sandwiches and Cakes!
On Sunday 22nd October Fareham PC managed to sweep the board at the SCPA Silver Salver competition beating all the other teams, taking 6 rounds. Well done everyone.
Our Charity Melee took place on 13 August 23 in aid Alzheimer’s Research. 18 players took part in this event. The Isle of Wight team were unable to attend at short notice, but we did have visitors from Portchester and Muscliffe.
Play started at 10 am and the weather was kind. A buffet lunch was served at 12.30. Many thanks to Lois, Jackie Lee, Mari and Marion. many thanks also to the cake makers. Absolutely delicious and made about £50 for the charity.
The results were as follows: 1st Thomas Williams from Portchester, 2nd Gerry MacAleese, 3rd Bob Bish, 4th Paula Fauvel, 5th Sue MacAleese, 6th Don Power.
Great to see Don playing so well after his eye op. Carol and I ( Gary) narrowly avoiding a fanny loosing 13/1 against Don playing with Thomas
A very good time had by all, no one with 5 wins, but top 6 had 4. And we made over £200 in total for our chosen Charity Alzheimer’s Research. Well done Fareham.
Brilliant sunshine at 9 gave way to Mizzle for most of the morning, but we saw sunshine in afternoon. A light lunch was included in the entry fee.
14 players participated in many very tight games. Bob, Robert and Sheila went through to the main with 3 wins, joined by Daena on 2 wins and plus 20 after narrowly loosing to Sheila 12-13. With Daena beating Bob and Sheila beating Robert we saw a repeat match in a very entertaining Final. The result. 1st Sheila Hayward, Club Singles Champion.
A worthy winner!
2nd Daena Vincent. 3rd Bob and Robert. Consulate winner Jackie Churcher, and Plate Sue MacAleese. Gary Fannie’d Tim. And he looks delighted about it.
On a day of contrasting weather, FPC hosted a Come and Try session at Whiteley! A great time was had and a lot of interest from parents and children and the members of Lost Search Party.
7 members of Fareham travelled to the north of Scotland, some 650 miles to play Petanque and catch up with old friends and make new ones
Sue and Gerry with Paul and Sheila, and Gary and Lois, took the opportunity to extend the trip to see some more of Scotland. Roz had to travel by train on Thursday evening as the original plan to travel was scuppered by a rail strike. This resulted in Malcolm driving to Aberdeen, about an hour away, to pick her up at 11.30 pm
On Friday we were welcomed by Malcolm and Shelly Mackenzie for a fish supper and to play Petanque at their home, overlooking McDuff harbour. A wood fire was built as the evening became a bit cool. Lovely, until we realised all our clothes stank of wood smoke, which lingered somewhat.
Saturday morning, we joined MacDuff Sharks for their usual Saturday Melee, in brilliant sunshine. Gary White won the match and was awarded a trophy and a gift of Petanque measure and Jacks. 2nd was Lou Robinson from MacDuff. 3rd was Malcolm Mackenzie.
We were invited to go to a Whisky tasting in the afternoon, later we played Bingo in the club room in the evening and had a very good time and picked up quite a few prizes.
Sunday was the main event. 11 Teams from across the region came to play. Fareham Fillies and Fareham Oaks played 5 games in pouring rain which gave way to cold scotch mist after lunch. Teams from Carnoustie and MacDuff played their first open event. Fochabers were 1st 5 wins plus 38 and Fareham Fillies 5 wins plus 32, 2nd . Just a few points in it.
An Indian meal was arranged for Sunday evening with some of the McDuff club. 20 people in all.
Many thanks to Malcolm and Shelly and all at MacDuff Petanque club. We have issued an invitation for them to come to us next time.
This years charity day was held on the 21st of August with proceeds going to Alzheimer’s Research, with Lois out of action in the kitchen the decision was taken to combine this event with the Isle of Wight twinning it being our turn to host. It was great to see 8 players from the island and together with guests from local clubs we had a total of 27 entries with Sheila, Sue and myself making a combined team from the kitchen. Our island guests caught an earlier ferry so we were able to start at 10.15 with 3 timed games before lunch.
An excellent BBQ was provided a lot of which was cooked at home by Lois on her crutches, it was almost a bridge to far to play and prepare the food so thanks to all those who pitched in.
2 more hard fought games in the afternoon and the raffle and prize giving a great day had by all.
Nice to see Wayne Thatcher has lost none of his skills finishing in 1st place with 4 wins
Runner up was Jay Willcocks
3rd place went to George
Strongest player was Islander Ralph
FANNY GALORE
Some Fareham players failed to cover themselves in glory suffering the dreaded nil point.
Mark
Bob
Jackie C
Richard
And also Wendy Thatcher.
Jackie Lee kindly ran the raffle which raised £135 for Alzheimer’s Research, big thanks to all who donated prizes.
The kitchen made £102 profit again many thanks to those who helped out and who brought along cakes.
Competition entrance fees raised £76.50 after paying for prizes.
Lovely weather saw a large crowd for the Whiteley Jubilee Picnic with members from Fareham hosting a Come and Try event. A slow start while the crowds enjoyed their picnics and entertainment by Titchfield Festival Theatre but with some encouragement people were soon queuing to have a go, kids at first but soon the parents were playing, so hopefully one or two new members?
Thank you to those who came along to help and special thanks to Nicki and her team at Whiteley Town Council.
Great day for the regional qualifier, the terrains looked spot on, surrounds smart and a row of gazebos just to finish it off. So many players thanked us for an excellent set up, we should all be very proud.
Twenty eight teams competed with two from Fareham: “The Minions” (Paul, Sheila, David and Carrie) and “Mind the Gap” (Tim, Daena, Sue and Roz) plus Mark and Paula playing for composite teams. Minions, Mark and Paula faired well enough, Mind the Gap need a good day at Q2 in Climping. Good luck and let’s hope they all make it to Melton Mowbray.
Lots of thank yous:
Martin and Gerry for getting there early to string the terrains, Marion, June, Mari, Jackie Lee and Julie who helped us in the kitchen meaning Lois got a break in the afternoon and I could fall asleep in the chair!
Everyone who turns out on second Wednesdays for gardening night.
And lastly to the weather, so much better than the doubles!
A great turnout for Fareham’s Open Doubles, 22 teams despite the poor forecast, a big thank you to all who played through the awful rain.
Morning leagues were well contested, Gerry and myself somehow scrapping into the main, 3 wins +5! Stephen Daiken and Pat Dennis leading the way on +33.
Big thanks to Lois and her team for splendid lunch and cakes.
The afternoon knockouts were dominated by Stephen and Pat, great to see Petanque played to such a high standard, but did you have to fanny us in the semi final?
Results:
Gold: Stephen and Pat, RU Paula and Robert, 3rd Mark and Will / Gerry and Gary. Consolage: Carrie and Jay.
Silver: Andy and Dawn, RU Alison and Steve. Consolage: Martin and Nicole.
