At Fareham Pétanque Club, new players are always welcome regardless of age, ability or experience. Pétanque often called “French boule,” is a game that’s simple to pick up and great fun to play. Truly a game for all ages and fitness levels.
The game is incredibly adaptable and players with disabilities are warmly encouraged to join in. The official rules of Pétanque even describe how the game is played from a wheelchair.

We have spare sets of boules in a variety of sizes available for you to try, so you can give the game a go without needing to invest in your own equipment. Come along, enjoy the welcoming atmosphere, and see how you get on.

New players are automatically covered by Pétanque England’s insurance during their first five sessions.

After that, to continue playing you’ll need to apply for Club Membership and a Pétanque England Licence.

A Petanque England Licence provides ongoing insurance and is required for all playing members of Fareham Pétanque Club.

Visiting players are welcome too!

If you hold a Petanque England Licence or a licence from another country, you’re invited to join us for a game.

Many of our members are also part of other Pétanque clubs, and we’re always excited to meet players from near and far.

All playing members of Fareham Petanque Club must also hold a Petanque England Licence for insurance purposes. If you’re joining us from another club and already have a Petanque England Licence, you can still become a Fareham Petanque Club member.

Note: only members with a Petanque England Licence issued through Fareham Petanque Club are eligible to represent the club in Southern Counties Petanque Association league matches.

Junior (Under-18) Players

We are passionate about encouraging young people to enjoy Pétanque, juniors are warmly welcomed. Once juniors achieve their Petanque England Skills White Award, they can join in with adult members during weekly club nights. To ensure safety, juniors may only participate in club activities with written consent from a parent or guardian.

We have in the past collaborated with local schools to introduce the game of Pétanque to young players with the hope of fostering a love for sport. This is something we intend to do again in the future.

Petanque England Skills Award Scheme

The Pétanque England Skills Award scheme launched in 1996 by David Lavelle, helps young players develop their skills from beginner to advanced level.

Juniors begin with the White award and progress through Green, Red and Blue. The higher levels focus on consistency and technical ability for national and international play. Awards are earned over time as players gain experience.

Each level has set requirements, successful candidates receive a medallion and certificate with recognition at Club, Regional and National levels.

Petanque England qualified club coaches can guide juniors through the scheme with support from Regional Development Officers or Petanque England Juniors if needed.

The scheme offers a clear rewarding pathway for young players and a structured approach for coaches.
