Cyril Baigent

We were sorry to hear that Cyril Baigent, who many people will know as a former member of Limesdowne/Fareham Petanque Cub, passed away on Tuesday morning, 27th June.

The family had had a good day together on the previous Saturday and Cyril was in good spirits. When leaving the house to do some jobs on the Tuesday morning he collapsed on the door step and died immediately. The family said he would have felt nothing at all and are only glad he was living in his own house and independent. Tulee is being looked after with her son where she has been living for some time.

We don’t yet know the funeral arrangements, but Cyril’s daughter Amanda will contact me so we hope a few of us will be able to attend. He certainly had a long and busy life and we will no doubt remember him at tomorrow’s doubles game at Fareham Petanque.

Isn’t that funny that several of us were talking about him this week when the daughter of one of his ladyfriends donated her boules to the club on Wednesday. We were especially talking about his trip to Turkey with 3 ladies, which made us all laugh. If you have not heard it please ask those who remember it….it will bring a smile to all of your faces!!

Petanque Coaching for St Columba Year 6 children

Children from Year 6 of St Columba C of E Primary Academy have been attending Petanque Coaching sessions at Fareham Petanque Club for the past 2 weeks. The class are undergoing a six week package on Friday Afternoons, which will culminate in an inter-class competition.

Well done to Josh Oldfied who won the pointing competition on week 2 – pictured here with FPC’s Lead Coach and Youth Development Officer, Malcolm McKenzie.

SCPA Regional Qualifiers 2017

Well done to all FPC members who took part in the four days of round-robin qualifiers to compete for the top 12 places to represent Southern Region in the Inter-Regional Competition. The qualifiers were played at Worthing Petanque Club and the Inter-Regional Competition will take place at Mill Rythe, Hayling Island in September.  A total of 23 teams from across the SCPA region entered, with the juniors making up a 24th team to avoid the need for ‘byes’ during the qualifying series.

Congratulations to Team Renegade (Malcolm & Mark, with Dave Lucas from The Ship) who ranked 5th overall and will be representing Southern in the Main; to Team Minions (Dave, Carrie, Mike & Hassi) and Team Hayzims (Tim, Daena, Paul & Sheila) who secured 10th and 12th positions respectively and will be representing the Region in the Challenge Cup.

There were many hard fought matches over the four days; commiserations to those teams who didn’t make the top 12. There is still a possibility of some being chosen to play in the Combined category.

Thank you to Hilary Kidd and Glenn Floyd for meticulously organising the round-robin qualifying series, and to Mary who ran the first day of the competition in Hilary’s absence.
